Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army.

Some of the word's most influential international Good Will Ambassadors, Dignitaries, and Developers assembled at the HARVARD CLUB OF BOSTON to raise money for New Horizon for Haiti's Au Coeur de Saulange School for Children. Among the distinguished guests were:

RAYMOND JOSEPH HAITIAN AMBASSADOR,

JERRY TARDIEU CEO, OASIS HOTEL,

CONSUL GENERAL FELIX AUGUSTINE,

PAULSON PIERRE- PHILIPPE, INTERNATIONAL ADVISOR, OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF HAITI.

Public systems of education are virtually non-existent in Haiti. Even schools that are run by the Haitian government require that Haitian parents pay for their children’s school uniforms, books, and tuition fees. Altogether, Haitian parents must, on average, budget about $US 150 annually per child for education costs. In a country where the annual per capita income is less than $400, basic education costs can be particularly prohibitive for Haiti’s rural poor who typically have three to four children per household.

Through the Au Coeur de Saulange School, New Horizons for Haiti provides free academic instruction, nutritional meals, basic medical care, and personal counseling to orphans and children from disadvantaged single-parent families in the Laferme-Leblanc region. Au Coeur de Saulange is the only completely free educational program in Laferme Leblanc. The academic nature of the Au Coeur de Saulange school is also a distinguishing factor of the program; many of the free schooling programs that exist in other regions offer only vocational programs.

While literacy and economic statistics specific to the Laferme Leblanc region are currently unavailable, the region’s isolation and extreme poverty indicate that the local adult illiteracy rate is much higher than the national illiteracy rate of 48%.
